Nitin Ramachandran, a 13-year-old boy fighting brain cancer, was granted his wish by the Washington Wizards to meet the team.
Ted Leonsis, the team’s owner, and his staff made the day special for Nitin, including signing him to a ceremonial contract, inviting him to attend the morning shootaround, and having players spend time with him. Nitin even joined the team as they ran onto the court before the game, with players carefully making sure not to knock him over.
Nitin’s visit was a turning point in his emotional recovery, and he was inspired by the experience to try to become a normal kid again. He struggled to walk during his cancer treatments, but on the day of his visit, he managed to shuffle his feet forward, a remarkable achievement.
Ten years later, Nitin is now a healthy 23-year-old, having undergone surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. He volunteers for Make-A-Wish and the National Brain Tumor Society, spreading awareness about the healing power of kindness.
Nitin upgraded his running distance from 10 miles last year to 11 miles this year and aims to run a marathon this fall. He has yearly MRIs to ensure the cancer hasn’t returned, visits doctors for regular check-ins, and wears hearing aids due to hearing loss from radiation treatments.
