The US Supreme Court has upheld a law that bans TikTok in the US unless its China-based parent company, ByteDance, sells the platform by this Sunday. The law, passed in April last year, allows TikTok to operate in the US until 19 January 2025, by which time it must either sell its US stake or face a ban. The Supreme Court has rejected TikTok’s argument that the law would violate free speech protections for its more than 170 million users in the US. The app will no longer be available on app stores and web hosting services once the ban takes effect.
