The Sacramento Kings aren’t alone in their Steph Curry misery. Back in 2009, when Curry was a prospect from Davidson College, the Kings were one of five teams that passed on him in the draft before he was taken by the Golden State Warriors. The Minnesota Timberwolves, infamously, declined his services twice with the fifth and sixth picks, opting instead for Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn.

When Curry arrived in Sacramento just four days before the draft, the Kings had already locked in on Memphis’ Tyreke Evans as their top prospect. It was a twist of cruel irony that Evans’ agent at the time was Bob Myers, a future architect of the Warriors’ dynasty. The Kings had defensive concerns about pairing Curry with a small forward and were drawn to the way Evans could get to the rim at will while holding his own on both ends.

Curry was never truly in the running for the spot, and his presence that day made it easier for Evans to showcase his physical superiority (as seen in the video below). Fast forward 15 years, eight months, and 21 days, and the butterfly effect was still being felt in the Bay Area on Thursday night. Curry reached a once-unthinkable milestone midway through the third quarter against the Kings, draining a 3-pointer to put him on the verge of 4,000.
