Savage reviews but Netflix’s $320m blockbuster is a hit

Netflix’s latest big-budget film, The Electric State, starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, is one of the most expensive movies ever made, with a $320m budget. Despite receiving scathing reviews from critics, it has gone straight to number one on Netflix’s chart after its release on Friday.

Film critics haven’t minced their words when delivering their verdicts on The Electric State. It is “a turgid eyesore” and “top-dollar tedium”, according to the Times, while the Hollywood Reporter said it is “slick but dismally soulless”, and the New York Times called it “obvious, garish and just plain dumb”.

But the bad reviews didn’t stop The Electric State from being a hit on Netflix, with the platform prioritizing entertainment and escapism over critical acclaim. Other recent Netflix hits, such as Red Notice, have also received lukewarm reviews but have been popular with viewers.

The Hollywood Reporter described one of Netflix’s other recent big-budget films, Atlas, as “another Netflix movie made to half-watch while doing laundry”, summing up the platform’s content. The criticism that nonono-entertainment for decades.
