The US has sent 10 members of two gangs, MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, to El Salvador, a move the Trump administration claims is aimed at combating crime and terrorism. The deportees came from Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, on an Air Force C-17 cargo plane. This move follows the administration’s growing collaboration with President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador, who is under investigation by US prosecutors for allegedly negotiating with gangs. Bukele has received international acclaim for his efforts to combat gangs, but critics say the deportations are driven by a desire to curry favor with the administration. In a separate case, a Salvadoran man, Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, was sent to the El Salvador prison in March after officials claimed an administrative error, but the administration has defied a court order to return him.
