Marcia Marcus, a figurative and conceptual artist, died on March 27 at the age of 97. She was a prominent figure in the 1960s art scene, exhibiting her work at galleries such as 10th Street galleries and the Delancey Street Museum. Her style was characterized as “thinned out shallower than a razor” and she was known for her bold, contemporary approach to art.

Marcus was a woman ahead of her time and faced many challenges as a female artist. She was forced to be tough and uncompromising in order to succeed, and her art reflected this. She was particularly known for her self-portraits, which often featured her in various costumes and settings.

Marcus was also a prolific painter, and her work is included in the permanent collections of several institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian. She continued to work throughout her life, even in her 90s, and her art was celebrated in final exhibitions before her passing.
