Europe Is Ready to Make Its First Countermove to Trump Tariffs

President Trump’s announcement of a 20 percent tariff on goods from the European Union has sent shockwaves across the bloc, and the EU is responding with a countermaneuver.

EU officials have been refining a list of retaliatory tariffs that will be put into place on April 15, which include whiskey, motorcycles, boats, and soybeans. The tariffs are a response to the steel and aluminum levies announced by the US, but are also just the start, as the EU plans to phase in its response to hit back at American tariffs.

European leaders are also working on plans to respond to car tariffs and across-the-board tariffs, and are aware that an escalating trade war could be painful for both the US and the EU.

Countries across the continent have different economic priorities and appetites for hitting back at the US, but the goal is still to make a deal to avoid an all-out trade war.
