China Tries to Downplay the Trade War’s Effects on Its Economy

China says it can withstand US tariffs, but experts question Beijing’s confidence.
A commentary in the Communist Party mouthpiece, the People’s Daily, said China is prepared for a trade war with the US and can potentially come out stronger as a result.
China has been trying to engage in high-level talks with the Trump administration in preparation for a potential summit between Trump and China’s top leader, Xi Jinping.
However, Beijing has struggled to receive a response from the White House despite Trump’s earlier statement that he was open to engaging with Xi.
China has responded to US tariffs with its own tariffs on US goods and has also put American companies on an unreliable entities list and an export control list.
The People’s Daily commentary said China did not close the door for negotiations, but prepared for the worst. It said the looming crisis would compel China to continue reforming its economy to rely more on its domestic market.
A researcher from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences was censored for criticizing China’s move to impose retaliatory tariffs. The center he worked for was shut down.
