In Auckland, New Zealand fireworks were set off from the iconic Sky Tower and at Sydney Harbour, Australia, singing could be heard as celebrations began. In Japan people gathered at the Tokudai-ji temple to offer prayers for the coming year before a bell tolled at midnight.
