Sir David Attenborough’s latest BBC One series documents how parents from across the animal kingdom sacrifice everything in order to raise their young. In the case of the African social spiders, the mother spider gives her life for her spiderlings, who eat her alive, making room for the new generation. This behavior is known as matriphagy.
The series, called Parenthood, explores parental sacrifice and dedication in the animal kingdom, featuring stories of orangutans, boxer crabs, elephants, and poison dart frogs. The filmmaker, Jeff Wilson, was inspired by observing how adaptable other parents in the wild are and how alive they are to changes in the natural world.
The series was filmed over three years in 23 countries across six continents and features a musical score by British composer Tom Howe and a theme song by Sam Ryder. Sir David Attenborough, at 99 years old, is still providing special and unique TV moments, always in no more than two takes.
The show’s director, Jeff Wilson, says the series is a “generational gift” that parents can watch and learn from alongside their children, featuring great behavior, emotion, humor, and relatable parental dilemmas. Parenthood begins at 19:20 BST on Sunday, 3 August on BBC One and iPlayer.
