Meta is expanding Teen Accounts to Facebook and Messenger, allowing younger teens to have restricted settings by default, with parental permission required to live stream or turn off image protections for messages. The system was first introduced on Instagram last September and has resulted in 54 million teens being moved to Teen Accounts globally.

Teen Accounts were found to have changed the experience for teens on Instagram, but campaigners say it’s unclear what difference it has actually made. Some critics point out that parents don’t know if the settings prevent their children from being exposed to algorithmically recommended or harmful content.

The system relies on users being truthful about their age when they set up accounts, and Meta will use artificial intelligence to identify teens who might be lying about their age. Ofcom found that 22% of 8-17-year-olds lie about being 18 on social media apps.
