Herbie Hancock is an all-time jazz great, and it is reassuring to hear that he suffers from the same modern-day procrastination problems as the rest of us mere mortals. He explains that he falls into rabbit holes on YouTube, including new music writing software, things about health, and tech things, which is why he has not made an album for 15 years. He quips, “I get victimised by it, so to speak, but that’s life.”
Hancock, 84, never been afraid to embrace technology, but normally he is the one doing the mastering, not the other way around. He chuckles and says, “I get to the point where, ‘Oh, my project, I love it, I should go with that,’ and then I get stuck doing that, and then I start procrastinating, and then I fall into the rabbit hole.”
He believes our fears about AI are overblown, and he had been an early adopter of synthesizers, blending genres with the electro-funk classic Head Hunters. In the 80s, he had a worldwide hit single with Rockit after embracing turntablism and scratching, winning five awards at the first MTV Awards for its classic dancing robots video.
At 84, he is still determined to try and future-proof himself by getting the robots on his side.
